Summary
As well as the capabilities set out in Being a GP, the GP Curriculum is supported by a series of 32 Topic Guides, grouped together in three areas: the Professional Topic Guides, the Life Stages Topic Guides, and the Clinical Topic Guides.
This page covers the Clinical Topic Guides, which explore specific medical conditions and areas of clinical care.
These Topic Guides explore specific capabilities in more depth, applying them in an appropriate clinical or professional context. Each Topic Guide is intended to illustrate important aspects of everyday general practice, rather than provide a comprehensive overview of that topic, and should not be viewed as a complete list of every topic needed to learn about as a practising GP. It’s important to consider each Topic Guide in conjunction with other Topic Guides and educational resources.
Most Topic Guides are broken down into a series of sections, including:
- An overall summary of the role of the GP in that area
- Any emerging issues in that topic area
- A Knowledge and Skills guide, which includes Common and important conditions, examinations and procedures, and service issues.
- A case discussion, which is then followed by questions linked to each capability designed to prompt learners to consider the key points of the case.
- “How to learn this area of practice”, with examples across work-based learning, self-directed learning, and learning with other healthcare professionals.
Finally, there are examples of how this area of practice may be tested in the MRCGP – Applied Knowledge Test (AKT), Simulated Consultation Assessment (SCA), and Workplace-based Assessment (WPBA)
Super condensed guides
The RCGP has also produced a series of “super condensed curriculum guides” for the Curriculum. These are summaries of the full versions of many of the Topic Guides and are intended as a resource for supporting educational conversations in training and as a means of identifying learning needs for professional development.
