We are the professional membership body for GPs in the UK. Our purpose is to encourage, foster and maintain the highest possible standards in general medical practice.
We support GPs through all stages of their career, from medical students considering general practice, through to training, qualified years and retirement.
A message from your Chair
Dear friends and colleagues
I'm Martin Marshall, a GP in east London and a researcher at UCL, and it is a massive privilege to represent you and to be leading the very special specialty of general practice.
Over 300 million patient consultations are carried out in general practice every year and our core value is whole person, relationship-focused, care.
This is the main reason many of us choose to go into our profession, and it must be strengthened and preserved.
I believe that general practice is in a much better place than we were a few years ago.
We still have a long way to go - particularly in getting resources to the frontline where they are most needed – but I am hopeful that we are heading in the right direction.
Your College is here for you at every stage of being a GP, and we are working on your behalf to reduce workload, increase workforce and look after your wellbeing.
I became Chair of the College on 22 November 2019 and you will a hear a number of consistent themes from me over the next three years:
- A robust call to recruit, support and retain more GPs and more members of the wider primary care workforce.
- Practical help to realise new ways of working within teams and across networks.
- Support to reinvigorate whole person, relationship-focused, care.
- New ways of engaging a larger proportion of members in the work of the College, in particular by promoting and supporting networks of people with shared interests.
Thank you for choosing general practice and for being part of the College. Together, we can ensure a bright future for general practice and patient care.

Strategic plan 2020 - 2023
Our strategic plan; 'Putting members at the heart of everything we do' sets out our objectives for the next three years:
The strategy is grouped around four priorities, each of which is underpinned by aims and activities to achieve those aims. The four priorities are to:
- Deliver practical solutions to tackle workload pressures and sustain and equip GPs to provide the best possible patient care.
- Develop the College into a dynamic and inclusive membership community.
- Promote the contribution of general practice and the role of the GP.
- Ensure members place a high value on their College membership.
The plan also defines 5 values, for RCGP members and employees, that will shape how we go about achieving these goals: Compassion, Inclusivity, Sustainability, Accountability and Integrity.
