Neighbourhood and community health services across the UK: Principles, enablers and the distinctive contribution of general practice – July 2026.
This report responds to the increasing focus from governments across all nations of the UK, and in many health systems around the world, on neighbourhood and community services as the future of primary and community care.
It sets out the key principles and enablers that are required to ensure services can be successfully developed and delivered in a way that improves care for patients.
It also highlights the unique contribution the GPs have to make to this work, utilising their deep understanding of local population needs through their long-term relationships with patients and their ability to make clinical decisions under uncertainty and integrate care across multiple conditions and services.
The RCGP is committed to supporting and enabling GPs to actively engage in the development of neighbourhood and community services. We look forward to further engagement with stakeholders and policy makers on the support, resourcing and collaboration required to deliver on these visions across the UK.
