The main roles of the Devolved Councils are:

  • To take forward the aims and objectives of the College in each of the devolved nations. This is done through contributing to the strategic and policy planning of the College and ensuring the key priorities are reflected in the Devolved Councils Operational Plans, which underpin the RCGP Strategic Plan.

To develop initiatives and strategies, particularly in respect of:

  • Improving patient care
  • Promoting the values of the College
  • Increasing resources for primary care
  • Facilitating continuous professional development of members of the College
  • Communication with members of the College
  • To work with local governments and health organisations and to advise RCGP on policy issues specific to the devolved country and affecting the College and general practice across the UK
  • To involve patients in the development and direction of College policy; each Devolved Council has their own patient group which contributes to UK-wide and  local projects and initiatives to support primary care
  • To respond to consultations on policy matters, both country specific and UK-wide
  • To offer a wide range of projects and initiatives that support GPs, and to rollout national initiatives locally
  • To promote and support academic research locally on all aspects of
    general practice
  • To recognise best practice and excellence in general practice and patient care in the devolved nations through annual awards

So what’s the difference between Devolved Councils and Faculties?

  • a Devolved Council provides "national" support (in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland)
  • the Faculties provide "local" and "regional" support across the UK

As mentioned above, Faculties and Devolved Council staff work closely together to provide seamless support to our members across the UK.
