RCGP responds to Lord Mann review of racism in the NHS

Professor Victoria Tzortziou Brown, President of the Royal College of GPs, said:  “Discrimination in any form is unacceptable, and everyone working in or accessing NHS services should feel safe, respected and valued, regardless of their background, faith or ethnicity.

“The findings of Lord Mann’s review are deeply concerning and highlight the importance of continued action to tackle antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred and all forms of racism across the NHS.

“General practice teams serve diverse communities and are committed to providing inclusive care for all patients and supportive workplaces for all members of staff. We therefore welcome efforts to strengthen support for staff and patients who experience discrimination, and to ensure any concerns are recognised, reported, and addressed appropriately.

“Any changes to performers list regulations would need to be carefully considered and accompanied by clear safeguards, due process and consistency, while ensuring patients and staff are protected from discrimination and racism in all its forms.

“What matters now is ensuring these recommendations lead to real and lasting improvements for staff and patients across the NHS, including in general practice.”
