Intercultural Communication Skills for GPs

A multicultural workplace is enriching but it can also bring its own communication challenges. This highly practical and thought-provoking workshop provides the opportunity to explore these challenges and to develop strategies that facilitate clearer communication. The workshop is aimed at GPs who work in culturally and linguistically diverse settings and are keen to improve communication with patients and/or colleagues. The workshop will offer support for both GPs who are English speaking and GPs who speak English as an additional language. Whether you're navigating idioms, accents or cultural cues, this workshop is designed with you in mind. If English isn’t your first language, you'll find practical tools to help overcome common barriers and grow in confidence when communicating with patients and peers.

When a Child Dies: A framework for general practice

The death of a child is a devastating event for any parent. The unimaginable has happened, and the death has far reaching implications for all who knew and loved them. General Practice is well placed to support parents through this trauma, offering person centred care, empathy and understanding. General Practice, however, can struggle to know how to best respond. Child death is more common that many realise, but is, thankfully, a rare event. GPs may not have dealt with this previously and will benefit from resources and guidance. “When a child dies – a Framework for General Practice” is designed to help General Practice to support bereaved parents. This session will outline the work that has taken place to produce this framework and will describe an approach that GPs can take to support bereaved families. Join this meeting if you wish to gain confidence in dealing with this challenging and emotive situation.
