There are different ways to work as a GP:

  • Salaried GP – Regular income, fixed hours, employee benefits.
  • GP Partner – Business owner, more control, higher income but more responsibility.
  • Locum GP – Flexible working, varied experience, but requires self-employment management.
  • Portfolio GP – Combines clinical work with teaching, research, or specialist interests.
  • Teaching – GP training, medical students, mentorship.
  • Specialist Roles – GP with extended roles (GPwER), Musculoskeletal (MSK) GP, women’s health, minor surgery, palliative care.
  • Leadership – Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG roles, Primary Care Network leads, medical education.
