RCGPNI Patient Group

The RCGPNI Patient Group is an active and important part of the Royal College of General Practitioners in Northern Ireland (RCGPNI), highlighting patient views and interests.

RCGPNI Patient Group consists of 2 GPs and 8 lay members who work on a number of local projects as well as promoting patient involvement locally. The group, Chaired by Mrs Karen Mooney (lay representative), meet 4 times per annum.

Further objectives

The RCGPNI Patient Group are keen to promote patient involvement and further its objective of increasing the number of patient participation groups within GP surgeries. To do this, they developed a personal and public involvement film and a waiting room poster, while also working with N.A.P.P., the College campaign partner, to updated their Patient Participation Group booklet. All of these items will be available to all practices in Northern Ireland by March 2015.

The RCGPNI Group launched the online DVD at the 2014 Annual Conference in Liverpool during the 'Patient Participation in Primary Care: A Future Requirement Towards a Primary Service of Excellence session'. This was the first all patient run session at RCGP Annual Conference. The Chair and Deputy Chair of the group were invited to the Public Health Agency's Regional Patient and Public involvement forum to show and discuss the outputs of this project.

More recently, the RCGPNI Patient Group have been working to improve patient understanding of appropriate use of general practice services. They developed both an information leaflet 'Getting the most from your health service' and a video (above) which outlines three things you can do before visiting your GP.

1. Can I self care?

2. Can I get advice from trusted online services?

3. Can I seek advice and assistance from my local community pharmacist?

This video was showcased at the RCGP Annual Conference on 25 October 2019 as part of the Devolved Nations Patient Session.
