Tamar Faculty

Welcome from Tamar Faculty, we support over 1,250 members, Fellows, Associates and AiTs across Devon and Cornwall. The Faculty is a group of volunteer RCGP members who provide local networking, education and support for members in the area. To take account of the wide geographical spread of members, we have four regional education leads covering Exeter, Plymouth, Torbay and Truro who organise free monthly CPD meetings in these localities.

GPSociety representative organises event to educate and empower GPs of the future

Aarthi Sriram, a medical student from the University of Plymouth and Tamar Faculty GPSoc rep organised a conference to promote general practice and the career to his peers across the South West. The event was open to medical students from Plymouth, Bristol and the University of Exeter, and welcomed GP speakers to talk about their career progression. Aarthi worked with the GPsocs at Bristol and Exeter Universities to offer the conference to students from all three universities. Over 200 students attended the event, hearing from GPs at various career stages, including a trainee, an academic, and a clinical fellow.

Aarthi said: "I feel that general practice gets a lot of attention in the media, and it was great to hear from people doing the job on what it’s like and why it’s a great career. I wanted to arm others with the right information to consider general practice as a career. I hope, following the conference, students feel empowered.”

Speaker Dr Upton added: “I am delighted that medical students are being offered the opportunity to explore careers in general practice at an early stage. This was not available when I was training. It is a fantastic opportunity for them to prepare for their futures and to contribute to the discussions about the future of general practice.”

Professor Laura Bowater MBE, Head of Peninsula Medical School, said: “It’s vital for students to experience a host of different settings while on placement, and we place huge value on primary care and general practice here at the University of Plymouth. The nationwide GP shortage is a huge issue, and I’m really proud to see Aarthi not only learn more about the GP profession, but help to share that knowledge to educate and encourage his peers.”

RCGP Tamar Faculty Continuity of Care Demonstration Practices

Applications are invited from general practices in Devon and Cornwall who would be interested in hosting workshops for RCGP member colleagues on continuity of GP care.

The Tamar Faculty will pay £250.00 per two-hour workshop, which will accommodate a minimum of four participants.

There will be a need for these workshops to be evaluated both by you as provider and by those attending to learn as many lessons as possible and to make future workshops as good as possible. You will be given information nearer the time what form is to be used.

Applicants should:

  • Believe in the importance of GP continuity and seek to provide it in your practice
  • Measure GP continuity in their practice, using the SLICC (please send 3 months of your measured GP continuity data)
  • Be prepared to discuss the clinical importance of continuity.

Selected practices will have Professor Sir Denis Pereira Gray available for advice and support, if wanted, as the St. Leonard’s Research Practice in Exeter has long experience of demonstrating practice-based continuity and he is happy to pass on tips and handouts.

Applications should be sent to Alice Sefton at tamar@rcgp.org.uk
