General practice post-Covid

Our recent report - General Practice in the post-Covid world (295 KB PDF) - has highlighted emerging evidence that suggests that patients who have recovered from the virus have experienced a range of health problems, including chronic fatigue, ongoing respiratory difficulties and mental health problems. These patients will now be managed in primary care which needs to be supported to effectively ensure high-quality patient care.

GPs will be at the forefront of helping patients cope with the lingering and difficult legacy left by Covid-19 and must be appropriately supported to care for patients in its aftermath. That’s why we have launched a new campaign calling on Government to support general practice.

We need government to commit to:

  • A comprehensive plan to manage the long-term health consequences of Covid-19 in the community, with additional primary care funding attached.
  • The expansion of the general practice workforce to ensure there are enough health care professionals to care for patients safely in the community.
  • Capital investment for better technology in primary care.
  • Resource for public health to create more effective community working.
  • Less regulatory burden to free up GP time to deliver and plan care for patients.
