Summary of updates in the latest version of the Curriculum
This version of the Curriculum was introduced in August 2025. Prior to that, the curriculum was last extensively updated in 2019. The 2025 update was undertaken with the central aim of ensuring the curriculum reflects changes in healthcare and General Practice, while minimising the impact on GP registrars and GP Educators. With that in mind, no changes to the structure and format of assessments and exams (WPBA, AKT and SCA) were made.
The key updates and changes in this version of the curriculum include:
- Revised learning outcomes, case studies, and reflective questions to support a deeper understanding of each Curriculum area, along with revised “Common and Important Conditions” sections that are now more concise.
- Progression point descriptors have been updated to ensure they are current and relevant to the changes in GP.
- Incorporating the impact of COVID-19 on clinical practice and modes of consultation.
- Incorporating climate change and other environmental factors, recognising their impact on health in sections like Allergy and Clinical Immunology, as well as in the Population and Planetary Health Topic Guide.
- Incorporating personalised care perspectives and social determinants of health
- Recognising the value of different types of knowledge and learning
- Enhancing inclusivity, accessibility and representation. More attention is given to accessibility challenges and accommodations for hearing impairments. Compliance with accessibility standards, including Braille and large print, was strengthened, along with the accessibility of physical spaces like surgery premises. New resources, such as Topic Guides for Neurodiversity and Neurodevelopmental Conditions, and Learning Disability, have been developed to address specific needs, and accessible communication strategies for people with visual, hearing, or learning disabilities were prioritised.
Listen to Dr Anil Sood, RCGP Medical Director for Curriculum, talk about the development of the updated Curriculum with NHS Education for Scotland in a special episode of their GP TiPS (Training in Practice Scotland) podcast.
