Mid-career matters

RCGP Scotland, supported by the Scottish Government, has developed a dynamic new programme to support mid-career GPs in dealing with the current strains and constraints of working in general practice.

This energising programme provides job focussed tools and ideas to help GPs survive and strive in their delivery of general practice.

Delivered over two half-day workshops, the programme also includes an element of peer support and networking to continually boost and energise participants.

Overview

What the programme covers

  • Effective workload management
  • Leading a team through change
  • Personal resilience
  • Diversifying your portfolio
  • Vicarious trauma and tools to manage this in day-to-day practice
  • Ways of working /career options at mid-career stage

Who this programme is aimed at

This programme is suitable for GPs who are five or more years post completing their GP training and five or more years prior to retirement. It is aimed at GPs working solely in service delivery of general practice/with no additional roles, whether you are salaried, locum, partner or working out-of-hours. If you are in your first five years following CCT and require support, please see our First5 to Partnership small group coaching offering.

What is involved

The programme consists of two half-day workshops (online and in-person cohorts are available) and participants must attend both sessions. Recognising the importance of peer support, you will be part of an active online support network with the other participants in your group. There will also be an annual in-person networking event, usually held around March, bringing together participants from across all cohorts of the programme.

By participating in this funded programme, you will be required to complete an evaluation at the end of the second workshop and engage in a post-course evaluation (conducted by an external evaluator) approximately six months following completion of the workshops.

Feedback from previous participants

I thought this course was really fantastic. It was encouraging and helpful, it showed insight into the daily grind of being a doctor and encouraged us to keep going

In the current climate and the conditions and circumstances we are all working in, this course was invaluable.

It is a very well researched and delivered course and certainly helped improve insight into some issues I have been dealing with. It's always good to know you're not alone.
