Medical students can join for free. As you qualify and become established, the cost of membership changes according to your circumstances. If you want to take a career break but still maintain a connection to colleagues and learning, there are lower rates. Life membership allows you to stay involved, so you’ll always benefit from membership that meets your needs.
Fee information for GP registrars
GP registrar membership is for qualified doctors who have yet to sit the MRCGP Examinations.
The College membership year runs from 1 April to 31 March annually.
Signing up with the College
When you join, your membership fee will be calculated monthly from your sign-up date through to 31 March 2026.
Please note: Your fee is based on when you join the College, not when your training begins.
Please contact the member services team to discuss suspending your membership while you are on leave from training.
- You can sign up for the portfolio only package which is £963*. This option offers coverage for up to four years from the sign up date, and requires a one-time payment upfront.
Please note, the portfolio option does not allow any access to the member benefits including GPSelf Test, free exam preparation
*This fee is not tax deductible as the government guidelines only allows you to claim back professional membership fees and this is not a membership.

Claim back your membership subscription
As a member, you can claim back up to 40% in tax on your annual membership subscription fees. Simply use the tax receipt you will receive by email after each payment.
Qualified GPs fees
* Annual gross income from all professional services from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.
** If your annual appraisal is completed in the field of general practice, this discount is not applicable. The discount applies only to those that have completed an annual appraisal with another medical organisation for which membership of the other Medical Royal College or Faculty is their primary specialism. You may be asked to provide evidence of your annual appraisal, if applying for this discount.
*** For leave/retirement commencing before 1 July. Outside of this period your fee will be assessed on a pro rata basis.
