Junior International Committee

The Junior International Committee is the early-career international voice within RCGP International. We bring together GP registrars and First5 GPs who are passionate about strengthening primary care through international exchange, education, collaboration and shared learning.

Our work is built on the belief that primary care is central to better health systems everywhere. Through exchanges, educational activity, communications and practical projects, we help early-career GPs develop a wider understanding of general practice/family medicine, learn from colleagues in different health systems, and contribute to the development of primary care globally.

We aim to create opportunities that are accessible, meaningful and mutually beneficial - supporting UK-based GP registrars and First5 GPs to engage internationally, while also building links with early-career family doctors around the world.

The Junior International Committee is made up of GP registrars and First5 GPs who volunteer their time to support the international work of the RCGP.
We bring together early-career GPs with interests in international exchange, education, communications, leadership and global primary care development. The committee works alongside RCGP International to create practical and meaningful opportunities for GP registrars and recently qualified GPs to engage with primary care globally.
Our work is led by the Chair, Deputy Chair and Secretary, supported by leads for exchange, education, communications and European engagement. We also work with regional ambassadors and volunteers who help connect the JIC with GP registrars and First5 GPs across the UK.
Through this structure, the JIC gives early-career GPs a voice within international primary care and supports the next generation of GP leaders to build confidence, networks and experience in global family medicine.

Current committee members

The current committee includes the following roles:

Current member Role

The JIC is part of a wider international primary care community. Through RCGP International, EYFDM, WONCA Europe and WONCA World, the committee helps GP registrars and First5 GPs understand how UK general practice connects with family medicine across Europe and globally.

RCGP International

The Junior International Committee (JIC) sits within RCGP International and supports the College’s international work by creating opportunities for GP registrars and First5 GPs to connect, learn and collaborate with colleagues across borders.

European Young Family Doctors’ Movement (EYFDM)

The Junior International Committee represents the UK within the European Young Family Doctors’ Movement (EYFDM). EYFDM is the network for early-career family doctors within the European Regional Branch of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA Europe).

If you are a GP registrar or within the first five years after qualification and are a member of the RCGP, you are automatically part of the EYFDM network. Members can apply for bursaries and exchanges, attend conferences, and participate in Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and networks.
Through EYFDM, GP registrars and First5 GPs can connect with colleagues across Europe, share experiences and contribute to mutual learning across European general practice and family medicine.

WONCA Europe and WONCA World

WONCA World is the global professional organisation representing family physicians and general practitioners. WONCA Europe is its European regional branch.
Together, these organisations provide opportunities for international collaboration, education and professional exchange, helping strengthen primary care through shared learning and experience.

Facilitate international exchange and shared learning

We support opportunities for GP registrars and early-career GPs to experience primary care in different health systems, including both outgoing and incoming exchanges.

Promote global primary care education

We develop and support educational activity that helps early-career GPs understand global primary care challenges, share practical learning and explore international career interests.

Strengthen international collaboration and shared learning

We work with colleagues, organisations and networks in the UK and internationally to support practical collaboration, shared learning and mutual understanding.

Develop early-career GP leadership

We provide opportunities for GP registrars and First5 GPs to build leadership, communication, project development and international engagement skills within the RCGP’s wider international work.

International exchange is one of the core activities of the Junior International Committee. We support GP registrars and First5 GPs to learn from primary care and family medicine in different health systems, and we welcome international colleagues who wish to gain insight into UK general practice.

Exchange is not only about travel. It is about shared learning, professional curiosity and understanding how primary care responds to different communities, cultures, resources and health system challenges. These experiences help early-career GPs develop broader clinical, leadership and system perspectives that they can bring back to their own practice.

Outgoing exchanges

For UK-based GP registrars and First5 GPs, the JIC supports access to a range of international exchange opportunities, including:

Hippokrates exchanges

Hippokrates exchanges are short, self-funded placements, usually lasting one to two weeks. They allow participants to experience general practice/family medicine in another European country.
Applicants interested in a Hippokrates exchange should contact the JIC Exchange team with their preferred country, proposed dates, a short CV and a brief personal statement.

FM360 exchanges

FM360 exchanges are self-funded placements outside Europe, lasting up to four weeks. They offer insight into general practice/family medicine in different health systems, communities and resource settings.
Applicants interested in an FM360 exchange should contact the JIC Exchange team with their preferred country, proposed dates, a short CV and a brief personal statement.

Conference exchanges

Conference exchanges usually combine a short period observing primary care in a host practice with attendance at a national or international conference.
These exchanges provide an opportunity to combine practical clinical observation with networking, professional development and wider exposure to international family medicine. Some funding opportunities may be available for selected conference exchanges, depending on the exchange programme and availability.
Uganda / Bwindi Community Hospital placements
The JIC has supported links with Bwindi Community Hospital in Uganda, where UK GPs and GP registrars have undertaken longer voluntary placements, often as part of an out-of-programme or post-CCT opportunity.
These placements offer an immersive experience in clinical care, teaching, quality improvement and primary care development, while supporting mutual learning between UK general practice and colleagues in Uganda.
Applicants interested in Uganda / Bwindi opportunities should contact the JIC Exchange team or RCGP International for further information.

UK-Japan exchange and collaboration

The JIC has supported UK-Japan collaboration through early-career GP/family doctor links, including shared learning and quality improvement activity. These opportunities help participants compare primary care systems, develop professional networks and explore areas of mutual learning between UK and Japanese family medicine.
Future UK-Japan exchange or collaborative opportunities will be shared through the JIC when available.
Incoming exchanges
The JIC also supports non-UK GP/family medicine trainees and early-career family doctors who are interested in observing UK general practice.
Incoming exchanges allow international colleagues to understand the role of general practice in the NHS, while giving UK practices and trainees the opportunity to learn from visiting doctors. Incoming exchanges may involve observing UK general practice alone, or, where appropriate, may be linked with attendance at a UK national or international primary care conference.
UK GP practices and trainers interested in hosting an incoming exchange visitor are encouraged to contact the JIC Exchange team.

Please note that exchange opportunities are usually observational, self-funded and subject to local availability, governance requirements and visa arrangements where applicable.

The Junior International Committee supports educational activity for GP registrars and First5 GPs with an interest in global primary care.

Our education work helps early-career GPs understand how primary care is delivered across different health systems, learn from international colleagues, and reflect on shared challenges such as access, continuity, multimorbidity, inequalities, digital health, workforce pressure and community-based care.

We aim to develop practical and accessible learning opportunities, including webinars, teaching sessions, exchange reflections and collaborative events with international partners.
Through this work, we support early-career GPs to build knowledge, confidence, leadership skills and a wider understanding of general practice/family medicine globally.

For education enquiries, please contact the education lead on educationJIC@rcgp.org.uk

The JIC works to make international primary care opportunities more visible and accessible to GP registrars and First5 GPs.
Our communications and engagement work helps promote exchange opportunities, educational events, collaborative projects and international primary care initiatives. We share updates through RCGP channels, social media, regional networks and partner organisations, helping early-career GPs stay informed and connected.

This work also supports local and international engagement by strengthening links with UK GP training communities, RCGP faculties, international family medicine networks and external partners.
Through communications and engagement, the JIC helps raise awareness of global primary care, share learning from exchanges and projects, and encourage more early-career GPs to contribute to the RCGP’s international work.

The Junior International Committee welcomes interest from GP registrars and First5 GPs who would like to contribute to international primary care work.

There are different ways to get involved, including exchange opportunities, education projects, communications, regional ambassador roles, webinars, short-term projects and international collaboration.

  • Committee roles

From time to time, the JIC advertises committee roles to support its core work in exchange, education, communications and governance. These roles are voluntary and provide an opportunity to develop leadership skills, contribute to RCGP International work and build professional networks.
  • Regional ambassadors
Regional ambassadors help connect the JIC with GP registrars and First5 GPs across the UK. They support communication with local training schemes and faculties, share JIC opportunities, and help identify trainees and early-career GPs interested in global primary care.
  • Exchange hosts
UK GP practices and trainers may be able to support incoming exchange visitors by offering short observational placements. Hosting an exchange visitor can create valuable opportunities for shared learning and international collaboration.
  • Education and webinar contributors

We welcome interest from members who would like to contribute to educational sessions, webinars, teaching resources or reflective learning materials related to global primary care.
  • Project volunteers

The JIC may occasionally seek volunteers to support short-term projects, collaborative work, event organisation, communications or international collaboration.
