Healthcare for Migrants - Access and Advocacy

An update on the current NHS charging regulations and entitlements and the impact they have on migrants in vulnerable circumstances. In this session we will cover the work done by Doctors of the World in advocating for these patients, including the ‘Safe Surgeries’ campaign and tips on how you can break down the barriers to primary care for patients who struggle to access it in your community.

In Part 2 of 'Healthcare for Migrants' we will focus on the clinical aspects of care for newly arrived migrants including using interpreters, initial screening, trauma-informed consultations, managing distress, mental health and wider psychosocial considerations. We will draw on experience from Doctors of the World and research from a specialist service in Norwich, and how to apply this learning to mainstream General Practice.

Healthcare for Migrants - Humanising Medicine

An overview of the humanities in medicine and how this approach can aid the delivery of care to those patients who are most hard to reach. This talk will aim to allow learners to explore their own understanding of working with complex patients and potential barriers to delivering care. It will cover concepts such as trimorbidity, shame, complex narratives and maintaining the patient central to this. There will be time for questions and hopefully it will be an interactive session.

First5 Bytesize - How to manage and resolve patient complaints

The number of patient complaints is on the rise and it is almost inevitable that a GP will receive at least one complaint in their career. Good complaint management can reduce the stress and anxiety that is naturally associated with a complaint, and prevent the complaint from escalating to The Public Services and Health Ombudsman, NHS England’s Performance Advisory Group and the GMC. This talk will discuss how complaints should be managed, what steps to take, and how to draft a good complaint response letter.
