RCGP General practice research special interest group

The Research in Practice SIG promotes high-quality, relevant research and effective study delivery in general practice and across the wider primary care community. We bring together clinicians, academics, students and allied health professionals to build capacity, strengthen delivery readiness, and ensure that research evidence translates into meaningful improvements in patient care.

Our aim

The Research in Practice SIG champions the generation and delivery of high-quality, relevant research across general practice and the wider primary care community. We bring together clinicians, academics, students, and allied health professionals to build research confidence and capacity, embed research as a routine part of everyday care, and contribute to the translation of new knowledge into meaningful improvements in patient care and services.

Our objectives

  • Create a space for developing new ideas and collaborative proposals.
  • Foster connections among GPs, researchers, students, and allied professionals with shared interests.

The group encourages:

  • Partnerships between practices with varying levels of research experience.

Building research capacity through:

  • Training in research methods.
  • Data analysis.
  • Academic writing.
  • Guidance on grant applications and ethical considerations.

It seeks to explore how research findings can:

  • Inform healthcare improvement.
  • Be shared via RCGP platforms, conferences, and wider communication channels.

As a newly established group:

  • A comprehensive work plan is being developed.
  • Members are invited to contribute ideas and expertise to shape the group’s initiatives.

Our activities

The group brings people together to share ideas, build skills, and grow confidence in research. From workshops on publishing and ethics to journal clubs and funding tips, there’s something for everyone. We spotlight member achievements through blogs and newsletters, stay active on social media, and link with WiseGP and the Primary Care Academic Collaborative (PACT) to keep research grounded in everyday practice.
