LGBTQ+ special interest group

The LGBTQ+ SIG will bring together GPs with an interest in LGBTQ+ healthcare and research in primary care. With an aim to reduce health inequalities faced by LGBTQ+ patients in primary care.

Group Aim 

The group be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to RCGP members of all sexual orientations and gender identities who are keen to provide high-quality, inclusive care, regardless of their level of knowledge or experience.

  • Promote inclusive general practice and training for all GPs regarding the clinical and non-clinical care needs of LGBTQ+ patients
  • Support and advocate for LGBTQ+ GPs
  • Contribute to policy relating to LGBTQ+ patient care

Current Work

The group is newly created, and we are in the process of producing a workplan the group are going to focus around the following three areas:

  • Connect – facilitate member engagement through the RCGP WhatsApp community providing a space for open communication and peer support.
  • Represent – advocate by influencing policy where appropriate and sharing best practices
  • Develop – create practical guidelines and activities to support members 

Participation from members is encouraged to help shape the direction and impact of the group.

Dr Alex Robertson

Alex (they/them) is a GP registrar in the Midlands. They are an advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusive primary care - for patients and staff. They use their work as a clinician and medical educator to challenge cisheteronormativity and transphobia within the medical profession, as well as addressing wider inclusion issues.  They have several other roles relating to LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing including as co-chair of the BMA LGBTQ+ network and a healthcare advisor for GIRES charity. Their research interests include the intersection between neurodivergence and queerness.
