User Involvement in Research

The Research Governance Framework states that "Participants or their representatives should be involved wherever possible in the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of research" so placing an a requirement on NHS organisations and health care researchers to involve users in research wherever appropriate.

The Research Group held a seminar on 11th June 2003 The Third Dimension: Towards Best Practice in User Involvement in Primary Care Research  the record of the proceedings of this meeting is now available online.

INVOLVE (www.invo.org.uk/) is a national advisory Group, funded by the Department of Health, which aims to promote and support active public involvement in NHS, public health and social care research.  
 
Patient-Reported Health Instruments Group (http://phi.uhce.ox.ac.uk)
is part of the National Centre for Health Outcomes Development and is based in the Unit of Health-care Epidemiology Department of Public Health, University of Oxford. The Patient Reported Health Instruments  website is designed to inform the selection of patient-assessed health instruments through the provision of:
  • a bibliographic database, which contains over 7000 records that relate to the development and testing of instruments.
  • details of selection criteria  to guide the application of patient reported health instruments.
  • reports based on comprehensive reviews of the literature produced for the Department of Health, covering child-health, diabetes mellitus, mental health, older people, and patient involvement which are downloadable from the website.
