About us

The South East Thames Faculty supports over 1,960 members, Fellows, Associates and Associates in Training in Kent and East Sussex as well as the outer fringes of South East London.

The faculty provides a number of educational and social events.

For AiTs in particular, we have produced a Welcome Pack:

Getting involved

We rely on members to play an active role locally, promoting the College aims and objectives. It is essential to raise and maintain awareness of demographic issues and needs of GPs and patients alike, and develop initiatives to support these.

If you would like to find out more about becoming involved with the faculty we would be delighted to hear from you (

Faculty News

The next faculty board meeting will be held at 8.00 pm on 15 February 2018 at the Somerfield Hospital, Maidstone. Those wishing to attend are requested to advise the faculty office (

All members are invited to attend the (June) AGM and board meetings. If you would like to discuss any item covered or would like an item to be considered at a future meeting, please contact us.

Faculty Events

We organise a number of annual social activities such as the 'Faculty walk' where members meet up to go on a local hike with a pub lunch. The 2017 Faculty Annual Walk took place on Saturday 10 June and was a five mile circular walk starting at the Chartwell car park, Westerham, Kent, and stopping at the Fox and Hounds public house for lunch. This annual event is free members and their families, the Faculty paying for our sandwich lunch during the walk.

Faculty Annual Lecture. The 2017 lecture took place on Thursday 5 October at the Hadlow Manor Hotel, Hadlow near Tonbridge, Kent (a new venue for this event). The guest speaker was Dr Robert Varnam, Head of General Practice Development at NHS England and a GP in a large inner city practice in Manchester. He spoke on the subject of "The future of primary care - where are we going and how will we get there?". The event is the faculty's main social for the year, with plenty of time to socialise over a sit down hot buffet before the lecture. It is a free event for members but booking is required for catering purposes.

Educational Events

Our programme of events for the first part of 2018 is now available for booking. We are holding a free half day research orientated workshop - Evaluating innovation in primary care - at the University of Kent at Canterbury on Saturday 3 February 2018. Led by Professor Tricia Wilson, Head of the Kent Academic Primary Care Unit, the workshop is designed to help you learn the tools of evaluation so that innovations you introduce at whatever level you work can be formally reviewed. Our next event is the second of our Essential Dermatology events - in conjunction with the Primary Care Dermatology Society - again at the Spa Hotel, Tunbridge Wells, on 28 February.

Jointly with the South West Thames Faculty, we are holding our popular two day minor surgery course in Brighton on 25/26 April, devised and run by experts and where the emphasis is on the practical. On 16 May in the Maidstone area we are running a gastroenterology event - A Pragmatic Approach to Managing GI in Primary Care. The event is GP focussed, looking at the very real dilemmas faced by GPs in diagnosing and managing patients presenting with common GI symptoms.

Faculty Initiatives

First5 Conference Travel Bursary

As part of our support for new GPs (First5s), we are delighted to provide a conference travel bursary of up to £400 to members in good standing in the first five years post-Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

The successful applicant will be expected to write an account of the conference for the Faculty bulletin and to join the Faculty Board for one year as the First5 representative.

Please contact us ( for more information about the application process.

Bursaries for Kent Surrey and Sussex Associates in Training

For KSS Associates in Training only, the RCGP South East Thames Faculty is pleased to provide one travel bursary of £200 towards the cost of attending the annual RCGP Primary Care conference held in the autumn. This award is managed by HE KSS.

RCGP South East Thames and South West Thames and Brighton and Sussex Medical School Student Prize

For Brighton and Sussex Medical School students only, the RCGP South East Thames and South West Thames Faculties are sponsoring a competition whereby the BSMS tutors invite their top twenty students to submit a reflection, on one side of A4, giving their thoughts of general practice. The tutors short list the entries and then invite the two faculties to agree the awards. The faculties could then publish the winning entries in their e-bulletin to members. First prize is a cheque for £200, second prize £100 and third prize £50.

Research and Development

Research Funding

We are pleased to offer 'seed corn' research funding. Up to £1500 will be awarded annually for pre-protocol, scoping or pilot work. It is hoped that the award, together with appropriate mentorship, will enable a novice researcher to make a credible bid for definitive project funding or a personal research fellowship to an external funding agency. Please contact us for more information.

Research Interest Groups

The Faculty is keen to develop research interest groups and will provide some financial support for meeting co-ordination. To establish a research interest group in your locality please submit a proposal outlining the aims, potential members and a programme of activities for the first year. Applications should be sent to the Faculty Office and should not exceed two sides of A4.
