Thames Valley Faculty

Welcome from Thames Valley Faculty

A warm welcome from Thames Valley Faculty. We are a group of volunteer RCGP members who provide local networking, education and support for members in the area. We cover Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire, supporting around 1850 members, Fellows, Associates and Associates in Training. As a Faculty, we have a particular interest in supporting our members' CPD and professional development and provide a range of education courses, all tailored to local needs.

Get involved

We meet four times per year, in February, June, September and November to progress our local engagement activities and discuss issues pertinent to our members, which are then fed back to the College Council.  All local members are very welcome to attend Board meetings and participate in these discussions – we are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us develop our local engagement programme.

Our next meeting will be our AGM and Dinner held on 13 November 2018 (see details below).

Upcoming events

We run many education courses and social/networking events throughout the year. Many of these contribute to CPD and professional development.

Our 2018 AGM will be held on 13 November 2018 at The Oxfordshire Hotel near Thame.  We are delighted to welcome Amanda Howe, previous President of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) from 2016-2018, as speaker.

Since 2001, she has been Professor of Primary Care at the University of East Anglia, where she was part of the founding team for a new medical programme. During her career, she has held multiple roles in undergraduate, postgraduate, and faculty education, including being Course Director for the UEA medical programme during its early years of development and accreditation. She is a highly experienced educationalist and facilitator, and has particular expertise in the teaching and learning of professionalism and patient safety; in the models and effectiveness of involving family medicine in community based medical education; and in resilience and doctors’ wellbeing. She also has clinical research interests in primary care mental health, the contribution of patients to health care, and in early interventions for risk factors. She served from 2009 – 2015 as an Officer of the Royal College of General Practitioners, previously chairing their Research Committee and the UK Society for Academic Primary Care, being the academic lead for both their annual conferences: for the RCGP this involved up to 3,000 attendees.

She will speak on "Surviving and Thriving – why GPs value international perspectives as part of the day job".
