The Role

We are seeking to recruit a Practice Nurse to work alongside Dr Ralph Sullivan, RCGP Clinical Champion for Patient Online. The role is not office-based but will require teleconference meetings and quarterly face-to-face meetings.

The Patient Online project gives patients the option to make appointments, order repeat prescriptions (transactional services) and, in England, access to their GP record, including coded information. This can be done using their computer, tablet or smartphone rather than having to phone or visit their practice.

The RCGP is working in partnership with NHS England to update and extend practical guidance for GPs, practice nurses and practice teams who offer online services for patients. This new phase of work aims to expand the range of resources and support materials for practices. It will focus on how record access can help both patients with long-term conditions or during end of life care, and their carers as part of a person-centred approach to health and well-being.

Existing RCGP guidance on the clinical use of Patient Online Access is available in the Patient Online Toolkit.

The Practice Nurse will work with the Clinical Champion, Clinical Support Fellows and project team to support and advise on the delivery of project outputs ensuring that the content is appropriate for its intended audience. Outputs include information and guidance for a scalable toolkit-based approach to the provision of guidance on using GP online services to support person-centred care for GPs, practice nurses and practice administrative staff. The toolkit will include best practice guidance using five clinical areas as examples. This will be supplemented with agreed patient-facing materials and case studies which will be agreed with NHS England during the scoping of each clinically focused toolkit. Examples of existing RCGP toolkits are available on our website. The Practice Nurse will provide advice on resources and information for the diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis clinical areas of the toolkit with potential to contribute to dementia and end of life care streams.

The preferred candidate will have an interest in person-centred approaches to the management of long-term conditions and using clinical records in the context of collaborative care and support planning. They will also have an interest in educating primary care audiences and raising awareness of best practice. They will have experience of GP online services, either through supporting implementation or through advising patients on how to use them and experience of producing materials to support a range of audiences (for example GP, nurses administrative staff, patients, carers).

Other duties will include engaging with the RCGP's person-centred care network, supporting Dr Sullivan in his role of Clinical Champion for Patent Online, attending project meetings when necessary and collaborating with the Patient Online Clinical Support Fellows.

How to apply

The RCGP aims to encourage and maintain the highest possible standards of patient care in general practice. We are looking to recruit a Practice Nurse who can work collaboratively to raise the profile and awareness of this work within both general practice and the wider primary care community with the aim of improving the quality of care and patient outcomes.

We would like to learn about your professional interest and experience of person-centred care and how you would use the resources to support a person-centred approach to Patient Online.
