The Role

To author learning materials for the RCGPs Essential Knowledge Updates (EKU) Programme, providing an overview and critical appraisal of the source document in which they are based to help GPs keep up-to-date with the latest changes in primary care as well as test existing knowledge and highlight learning and service needs.

Term of office

One-year fixed term (potential to renew at end of term) 

Principal responsibilities

  • To work closely with the EKU Development Fellow and other project team members to contribute to the development of the Essential Knowledge Updates
  • To write high quality content and to ensure delivery of content to agreed specification and timescales (highlighting risks and issues to the relevant project team members if required)
  • To participate in the review and evaluation of the EKU materials as required
  • To liaise as required with the project team during the development and review of the course materials

Essential attributes

  • A qualified GP with current general clinical practice experience, working a minimum of two clinical sessions a week in primary care.
  • To be in good standing with the GMC (and if appropriate on a performers' list or its equivalent).
  • An ability to author high quality educational and clinical materials in the areas concerned, including a high level of English literacy.
  • Some previous examples of writing or editing.
  • Sound IT skills (including an ability to use Word, PowerPoint, Excel and good internet and email skills).
  • A broad understanding of the principles of education adopted in general practice and an interest in online education.
  • Demonstrable communication, team-working and organisational skills.
  • Ability to attend occasional authors workshops in London.

Desirable attributes

  • Current clinical work that provides exposure to relevant training and educational issues.
  • Previous experience in education, authoring or eLearning development.
  • Previous professional experience in GP education, or an appropriate post-graduate qualification.

  • EKU Development Fellow and CPD Manager
  • Remuneration

Reimbursement will be paid at the College's standard rate for up to two days per Update, conditional on delivery of content to agreed standards and deadline.
