Thames Valley Faculty

Welcome from Thames Valley Faculty

A warm welcome from Thames Valley Faculty. We are a group of volunteer RCGP members who provide local networking, education and support for members in the area. We cover Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire, supporting around 2200 Members, Fellows, Associates and Associates in Training. As a Faculty, we have a particular interest in supporting our members' CPD and professional development and provide a range of education courses, all tailored to local needs.

Upcoming events

We run many education courses and social/networking events throughout the year. Many of these contribute to CPD and professional development. In 2019 and early 2020, as well as our usual offering of skills-based educational events, Members saw events focusing on First5 development, as well as events promoting GP Resilience and Wellbeing.  Many events have been paused as a result of the pandemic, and others have moved online.  Do keep an eye on our events page for details of what we have planned for next year.

As well as CPD events, our Faculty also supports your wellbeing with social events and sessions focusing on looking after your emotional health.

Getting involved

We meet four times per year, in February, June, September and November to progress our local engagement activities and discuss issues pertinent to our members, which are then fed back to the College Council. All local members are very welcome to attend Board meetings and participate in these discussions – we are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us develop our local engagement programme. Our next meeting will be our Board Meeting on Thursday 16 September 2021 at 7pm - details below.

Board meetings

Our next Board Meeting will take place at 7pm on 16 September 2021.  It will be held virtually, via Zoom.  All members of the Faculty are invited to attend Board meetings - please contact us at for more information and to express interest in attending.

Faculty AGM

Our 2020 Annual Dinner & AGM  was planned for 10 November 2020.  Whilst we had planned an evening occasion with dinner, circumstances meant we had to move the AGM online to Zoom.  We were delighted to welcome RCGP Honorary Treasurer, Dr Steve Mowle as our keynote speaker.

Our 2021 AGM is planned for 9 November 2021 and we have everything crossed that we can return to a Face-to-Face event.  Watch this space for more information about venue and keynote speaker.

Faculty Events

We run an extensive education programme for all of our Members. Feedback from our events, from both delegates and speakers is universally positive. Details of the next few events can be accessed using the 'Upcoming Events' box on the right of this screen.

Faculty Education Lead - Dr Lee Aye

Our Education Lead, Lee, is a GP Training Programme Director for Buckinghamshire VTS, with a record of achievement in planning, delivering and maintaining standards in an educational programme. He is an active member of his practice education team, with a record of innovation and identifying new opportunities. Your ideas on educational activities within Thames Valley Faculty will be very welcome, and you can contact Dr Lee Aye

First5 support

We are organising our programme of evening First5 EASE (Educational and Support Evenings) events for groups in Oxford, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire which are free of charge to members.  Click on our events page for information on our next evening educational event.

For regular updates, see our First5 Facebook page - you can join the group. Our local First5s also communicate via a WhatsApp group.  Get in touch if you would like to be included.

If you are interested in setting up a CPD group in another area of the Faculty we’d be happy to provide advice and support - please contact the Faculty Office at

Work Experience Programme

How do we promote our rich and varied profession to school students - particularly those from lower socio-economic backgrounds and other under-represented groups? This has been the question considered recently by the Thames Valley Faculty Board who, in collaboration with the Student Engagement Officers at central College, have developed a plan to encourage young people locally to think about medicine and specifically, general practice as a career. Dr Ian Wood, our Honorary Treasurer and one of our First5 reps, has worked hard to draw up a plan of action.

Our first successful pilot programme, run in February 2020, saw eight Year 12 students from some of the most deprived areas of Oxford paired with local practices for a week's work experience followed by a tailored workshop run by the Faculty.

If you or your Practice would like to get involved, do get in touch at
