Long-term primary care transformation

The RCGP is delivering long-term primary care transformation in Greater Manchester

RCGP Primary Care DevelopmentSince 2017, the RCGP has worked in partnership with Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership (equivalent to STPs in other parts of England) to develop and deliver a long-term primary care transformation project to 480 GP practices in Greater Manchester and provide expertise to the GP Excellence Programme (GPEx).

GPEx aims to support and improve GP practices in Greater Manchester to enable care for the population by thriving general practice. This is delivered through support and development of individuals and GP practices:

  • creating positive engagement across the Greater Manchester system
  • creating an ‘improvement culture’ enabling GP practices to build on their QI capabilities
  • enabling GP practices to integrate these skills into their day-to-day practice to help provide safe and effective patient care.

The programme aims to identify, train and develop the skills of local QI Champions.

We have provided:

  • four leadership training courses (Lead, Manage, Thrive!)
  • three Working at Scale courses to more than 500 delegates
  • practice-level training on the impact of GDPR
  • practice manager development diplomas and courses
  • support for GP practices following adverse CQC outcomes
  • development of connections with innovative healthcare organisations across Greater Manchester.

The programme has its own website which hosts a range of quality improvement tools, case studies, eLearning modules and signposting to resources to support primary care teams. The website also provides opportunities for peer-to-peer support through discussions, webinars and engagement events.
