Your UK Chair's Priorities

This year the RCGP has changed how it will set its Policy and Campaigns Priorities. We are now setting priorities for 3 years instead of one and we want to make sure that we are focussing on what our members want.

We spoke to our members online and in person, as well as our patient group, about what they think should go on our shortlist of priorities. This shortlist is now going out as a poll for members Rank their top priority

I will also be setting my own priority.

After looking at what you submitted as suggestions for our priorities and based on what my own ambitions are for general practice as Chair, I have decided that my priority will be focussed on reinvigorating the concept and the practice of relationship-based care.

High quality general practice is enabled when the doctor knows the patient and vice versa. This requires time to build, nurture and maintain a relationship of trust between patients and their GPs. Rising workload is damaging our ability to deliver unhurried consultations and risks reducing our effectiveness as person-centred doctors.

We will campaign for our members to be empowered to deliver relationship-based care by asking for more resources and by exploring how the fundamental concept of 'continuity' needs in some situations to be redefined to suit the evolving needs and expectations of patients and practitioners. We will clearly differentiate where relationships of trust add value, how sessional and locum doctors can build trust quickly and what needs to be done to ensure that relationships are maintained.

To have your say on what the College's other two priorities should be you can vote here and rank your top options.
