Realising the vision

We believe there are six key areas that we need to see Government action to deliver our vision for the future of general practice:

Proper resourcing illustration

General practice needs proper resourcing; we need an expanded workforce to meet patient demand and deliver care. To achieve this, 11% of the NHS budget must be spent on front line general practice.

 Workforce for the future

We need an increased workforce, both the number of GPs and members of the wider practice team working on the frontline must rise significantly.

 Enhanced training and education

We need enhanced and extended GP training to reflect the complexities of expert medical generalism. There must be clear career paths for members of the wider practice team.

 Technological innovation illustration

We need technological innovation to deliver a shared electronic record for every patient; broadband for every surgery; and AI to support clinicians carrying out administrative tasks.

 Modernised GP premises illustration

We need upgraded and purpose-built surgeries that can accommodate the expansion of the practice team and the colocation of a wider range of clinical and non-clinical services.

 Research illustration

We need an expansion of the knowhow and capacity of general practice to carry out research and innovation to support the delivery of care.

Over the coming months we will set out how our vision should be implemented in the form of roadmaps.
