Signposting skills and good telephone call handling

Most of our interactions with patients are via the telephone. In this session we will examine how the telephone impacts on the communication model. We will look at the golden rules of call handling from how we answer the phone, good use of questions, active listening and dealing with angry callers. We move on to look at signposting – what it is and why we might want to consider it. We see the tools used by some practices and discuss how to deal with ‘I’m not telling you, you’re just the receptionist”.

Practical stress management and developing resilience

Working in the GP practice today involves dealing with high demand and high expectations – not just from patients but from the whole service. Staff keep going the extra mile – because ‘that’s just what we do”. Very often our resilience is low and we may not recognise it until we start experiencing the symptoms. In this insightful and fun session we will uncover the components of resilience and measure our own levels – how is your resilience today? Stress is one of the biggest contributors to low resilience and we will look in detail at what stress is, why it occurs and its effects – not just on us but on the rest of the team. Our trainer will take us through a range of quick, and effective, stress reducing techniques we can use every day in the practice including challenging our thought process, guided breathing, quick mindfulness and simple Qigong rebalancing techniques.

Dealing with aggressive patients & ZERO tolerance

We are working in a demanding service with high customer expectation. Why do patients get angry? Does your first reaction help or make things worse? How do we recognise and handle someone who is very angry or aggressive – useful body language, what is good to say, and what is not? We uncover what ZERO tolerance really means when dealing with angry, and perhaps violent patients in the practice? This session gives a simple overview of the law around aggression and violence – where is the line between the two? We also discuss the considerations for staff around ‘known violent patients’ and learn the recommended NHS de-escalation skills.

Please bring your dermatoscope along with you if you have one, as there is a practical session where you will have a chance to practice using it on your colleagues. This is a basic level course, including practical tips on how to look after your scope, keep it clean and how to take good pictures through it.
