Zero Tolerance training for front line GP staff

We are working in a demanding service with high customer expectation. Why do patients get angry? Does your first reaction help or make things worse? How do we recognise and handle someone who is very angry or aggressive – useful body language, what is good to say, and what is not? We uncover what ZERO tolerance really means when dealing with angry, and perhaps violent patients in the practice? This session gives a simple overview of the law around aggression and violence – where is the line between the two? We also discuss the considerations for staff around ‘known violent patients’ and learn the recommended NHS de-escalation skills.

Signposting for GP Receptionist

Most of our interactions with patients are via the telephone. In this session we will examine how the telephone impacts on the communication model. We will look at the golden rules of call handling from how we answer the phone, good use of questions, active listening and dealing with angry callers. We move on to look at signposting – what it is and why we might want to consider it. We see the tools used by some practices and discuss how to deal with ‘I’m not telling you, you’re just the receptionist”.

Care Navigation at the GP reception (part 2)

This session is the following up to the foundation signposting session (part 1) previously delivered, however you don't have to have attended part 1 to attend part 2. In this sessions we change our thinking and approach to how we deal with appointment requests at reception. We examine what to actually say to patients (especially challenging patients) - useful phrases and buzzwords. How do we get the most pertinent information in the shortest time whilst building rapport with patients - without this information we cannot direct the patient to the right place at the right time. We aim to grow signposting into useful care navigation in the practice.
