Top Tips depression in young people

Depression is very common, and is the second leading mental health problem in young people. Increasing with age, one in two young people will suffer from depression in adulthood. Depression can seriously impact a young person's life, affecting both education, employment, and family life. The features of depression in young people are similar to those in adults and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recently published the depression in children and young people clinical guideline.

This evidence-based Top Tips for GPs on depression in young people, produced by GP Principal Dr Richard Churchill and the RCGP Mental Health Clinical Priority project team, contains pointers for best practice in the identification and management of depression in young people. We hope you'll find this document useful when treating young people who may be depressed.
