New course on antibiotic prescribing in primary care launched

The TARGET team at Public Health England, in collaboration with the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, have developed an online course on the Future Learn platform aimed at primary care healthcare professionals who are involved in the treatment of common infections.  

The course will look at many aspects of antibiotic prescribing in primary are from prescribing for urinary tract infections through to managing patient expectations. By the end of the course people will understand how to apply practical antimicrobial stewardship strategies in your practice. 

TARGET stands for: Treat Antibiotics Responsibly, Guidance, Education, Tools. The TARGET antibiotics toolkit, hosted on the RCGP website, provides primary care professionals with a range of resources to support prescribers’ and patients’ responsible antibiotic use.

The course will cover:

  • Introduction to antimicrobial resistance in primary care
  • Prescribing in Urinary Tract Infections
  • Assessing the Need for Antibiotics
  • Managing Patient Expectations and Back up prescribing
  • Antibiotics for Children
  • Common Practice Approach

Week one will commence on Monday 28 January 2019; a new topic will be released every week for six weeks and each topic takes approximately one hour.
