Dr Imran Rafi  with RCGP Chair, Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard and Dr Matt Hoghton

Dr Imran Rafi and I have been working in the RCGP Clinical Innovation and Research Centre (CIRC) for over eight years in various roles and we demit our latest roles as joint medical directors at the end of November 2018. Whilst one of us is an academic and the other a front line innovator, we have been fortunate to have this opportunity to deliver a wide portfolio of projects that serve to raise the profile of clinical areas in primary care.

Compelling leadership, infectious passion, and stamina

We have worked with GPs and practice staff, trying to support them to deliver better quality and level of care to their patients across the UK. We have worked in partnership with a variety of funders, including charities and government bodies, to develop practical support and resources. The inspirational CIRC Clinical Champions and their support fellows have championed innovation and quality to ensure that primary care is clinically effective and sustainable for the future. They have shown compelling leadership, infectious passion, and stamina in being a significant seed for change. We have both personally been Clinical Champions, Imran in Genomics and Rare Diseases and Matt in Learning (intellectual) Disabilities

Our CIRC Team have continuously contributed to changing the face of primary healthcare by delivering excellence in Clinical Priorities, Innovation, Quality Improvement, and Research. As well as the amazing champions we have known, we would like to express our huge gratitude to the unsung clinical advisors' network. In particular, nearly 300 GPs review draft NICE guidelines and quality standards to ensure the voice of the generalist and general practice is heard in national guidelines.

Thank you to all past and present staff

Nearly 1000 UK practices have the WOW factor of being involved in clinical research as Research Ready practices. The RCGP continues to actively promote big data with collaboration with both the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) and the RCGP Research Surveillance Centre (RSC) - great data makes great doctors make great care. Professor Simon de Lusignan and his team at the RCGP Research Surveillance Centre RSC in Surrey University have set up the first national GP workload observatory which will shortly provide business intelligence back to practices. Please get your practice to sign up to both CPRD and RSC

We are both proud of the CIRC team and the work it has done with the resources available. We would like to thank all the past and present staff for sharing our divergent thinking, insatiable curiosity and stamina. Just as we hope we have made time to invest in others, we are aware of the huge support we have had from RCGP Council and particularly present and past officers. Thank you. We leave CIRC in the capable hands of Assistant Director, Rachel Joynes. Just as we hope we have made time to invest in others and offered a helping hand to the leaders of the future we are both grateful for having ours firmly gripped by Professors Nigel Mathers and the late Professor Helen Lester when we started. Mentors and networks are important for us all, whether you are just starting off in your career in general practice or you are well established
