Providing clarity to trainees around the Recorded Consultation Assessment

1 June 2020

Thank you all for your continued patience as the RCGP and COGPED work to develop and deliver the Recorded Consultation Assessment (RCA). Thank you as well for all your feedback - we are listening, and your voices are being heard.

We've received a lot of queries from trainees as to how long the RCA will run. Due to the ongoing uncertainty around COVID-19, it’s impossible for us to give an exact ‘end date’ for the RCA. We are, however, keen to provide as much clarity as possible, and can now confirm the following:

  • The RCA will run until at least December 2020
  • We will review the situation in December, and make a decision then around whether to move away from the RCA
  • We recognise that any change in assessment methods will need to be announced several months ahead of time
  • As a result, the CSA will not run in 2020 and it is unlikely we will move away from the RCA until August 2021 at the earliest
  • The July 2020 exam diet is limited to those whose expected CCT date as of 18 March 2020 was before 1 October 2020. Any other trainees who feel they have exceptional circumstances for requesting an early attempt should approach their Deanery / HEE before the end of the day on 10 June 2020
  • There will be further RCA exams held before the end of September 2020 (limited to trainees whose expected CCT date as of 18 March 2020 was before 1 January 2021)
  • The precise schedule of the RCA after that date has yet to be decided

We hope this gives you a little more certainty about the situation. When any decision is made to resume operation of the CSA - or if there are any updates to the above timescales - we will give you as much notice as possible.
