The College has had  around 100 pieces of coverage in national, regional and trade media outlets in July.

Here are some of the highlights:

GP patient survey

The College's analysis of the latest GP patient survey, and call for the new Government to implement the pledges made in the GP Forward View, was featured in The TimesSky News also interviewed Assistant Honorary Treasurer Steve Mowle, and the story was also covered by Sky News radio. 

Northern Ireland

RCGPNI Chair John O'Kelly was interviewed by UTV News with Health Minister Michelle O'Neill about the need to take action and support general practice. John also did interviews with Q Radio and U105. Also covered by ITV News.

Patient lists

RCGP Chair Maureen Baker was quoted in The Guardian and The Times in response to NHS England's plans to review GP surgeries' patient lists. RCGP Scotland Chair Miles Mack's response to similar proposals in Scotland was covered by the Scottish Sunday Express.


Maureen Baker's response to new NICE guidelines on sepsis was covered by the Press Association, the BBCthe Daily Mail and the Huffington Post.


Maureen Baker's response to a BJGP study which found that the majority of nursery schools exclude children with acute infective conjunctivitis and around half refuse to let them return without taking antibiotics was covered by the Daily Mail.

Racism in the NHS

Maureen Baker's response to a survey carried out by Network Locum which found approximately 63% of doctors have experienced racist abuse from patients or colleagues following the EU referendum was covered by the i.

This was also the topic of her latest GP Online column.

Cervical cancer

Honorary Treasurer Helen Stokes-Lampard's comments on young women having their cervical smear tests 'rejected' by labs because they are under the official screening age was covered by the Daily Mail.


Vice Chair Tim Ballard’s comments on diagnosing stress-related symptoms were covered by the Daily Mail.

Mental health

Mental Health Lead Liz England’s response to HSCIC figures which revealed a rise in antidepressants prescribing was covered by The Times and The Guardian.

Liz’s comments responding to research in The Lancet on the effectiveness of Behavioural Activation therapy were covered by The Times and The Sun

Clinical Fellow for Mental Health Faraz Mughal’s response to figures obtained from 15 mental health trusts which reveal that 60% of GP referrals to child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) lead to no treatment and a third are not even assessed, was covered by The Guardian.  

Leadership in NHS

Supporting Federations Lead Mike Holmes took part in a live online discussion on the Guardian Health Network. The topic of the discussion was Nurturing Leadership in the NHS and can read the full discussion.


Physical Activity and Lifestyle Champion Zoe Williams was quoted in The Sun for her response to a report in The Lancet on the benefits of doing an hour's exercise every day.

Health and Work

The College's Health and Work Lead John Chisholm spoke to Press Association about sickness absence and the importance of being in work for long term health and wellbeing. His comments were picked up widely in the local media.
