RCGP urges parents and teachers to be aware that COVID-19 symptoms in children may be different to those displayed by adults

Publication date: 08 September 2020

Professor Martin Marshall, Chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: "COVID-19 is a new virus that we’re learning about all the time, including its symptoms and how it impacts different groups of patients, such as children - and this is useful data. GPs are doing their utmost to keep up-to-date with the latest evidence and relevant clinical guidance to ensure that we can deliver the best possible care to all our patients who have conditions associated with COVID-19.

"As children return to school, it’s important that parents and teachers are aware of potential symptoms of COVID-19 and official guidance about what to do if a child has them - particularly given that, as this research shows, symptoms may be different to those displayed by adults.

"The current information we have tells us that COVID-19 is generally a mild disease in children, with a low morbidity and mortality rate. Understanding that children may exhibit symptoms that are different to adults is useful in order for GPs and our teams, as well as our specialist paediatric colleagues, to identify the virus in children and respond appropriately.

"If parents do have concerns about their child's health, we would urge them to seek the appropriate medical advice, either contacting their GP, NHS 111, or in emergencies dialling 999."
