RCGP Scotland welcomes the launch of NHS Pharmacy First Scotland

Publication date: 29 July 2020

The Royal College of General Practitioners Scotland (RCGP Scotland) has today welcomed the launch of NHS Pharmacy First Scotland.

Pharmacy First Scotland is a consultation service based within community pharmacies throughout Scotland which provides patients living in Scotland with advice and, where appropriate, medication for a range of minor illnesses. After consultation with patients, community pharmacists may also refer patients to other healthcare professionals such as GPs for further advice or treatment.

Commenting on the launch of Pharmacy First Scotland, Dr Carey Lunan, Chair of RCGP Scotland said:

"I very much welcome the launch of this fantastic service, which replaces the Minor Ailment Scheme and broadens the service out to all patients living in Scotland. This is an important step forward in terms of ensuring that patients can receive the care that they require in the most appropriate setting for them. In many cases, speaking to a highly trained pharmacist on their local high street will be a more convenient option for patients suffering from a range of everyday minor healthcare problems and will ensure that they can get the advice or treatment they need quickly and safely in order to be able to get on with their day.

"The launch of this service will also help to ensure that the whole of the health service can more effectively manage the rising levels of demand that are being experienced. The recent pandemic has highlighted just how fragile our health service is and as services begin to recover and continue to deal with the lasting impact of COVID-19, I would urge patients to work with us to ensure that we can continue providing care to those who need it most by utilising other excellent healthcare services such as Pharmacy First Scotland when it is appropriate to do so".
