Pledges to invest in general practice and boost the GP workforce welcome but more details needed, says RCGP

Publication date: 19 November 2019

Responding to the Liberal Democrats' announcement on health today, Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: "We are pleased that once again the need for greater investment in general practice is being recognised during this election campaign.

"General practice is the frontline of the NHS for millions of patients, carrying out the vast majority of NHS patient contacts and playing a crucial role alleviating pressures in other parts of the health service.

"We know that investing in general practice is investing in the entire NHS – which is why our Back GP manifesto calls for 11% of the NHS budget to be spent on general practice.

"We are pleased to see a further announcement for additional investment in the NHS and welcome the fact that the Liberal Democrat’s have committed to tackling the GP shortfall.

"We are also pleased to see a focus on improving premises and infrastructure. However, it is essential that GP premises are a focus within this as we know that half of GPs say their premises are currently not fit for purpose.

"We don't yet have important details about how these policies will work in practice. We cannot simply rely on the international recruitment of GPs alone, and more must be done to increase the number of GP training places, retain the GPs we have, and make general practice a more attractive place to work as a matter of urgency."
