RCGP Chair praises GPs for their 'enormous efforts' as Care Quality Commission annual report reveals impressive results for practice inspections

Publication date: 11 October 2018

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: "GPs across the country should be applauded following today's CQC State of Care report, which found that 91% of surgeries are rated as 'good', with a further 5% listed as 'outstanding'.

"We are particularly heartened to see the rise in the number of practices that have progressed to good. The College's own Peer Support Programme has been a major factor in many of these transformations and I would like to congratulate our teams and the practices involved.

"The number of surgeries rated as 'safe' has increased since the last report - from 88% in 2017 to a staggering 93% in July this year.

"This is no mean feat and made even more impressive when we consider the intense workforce and resource pressures currently facing our profession, and the enormous efforts GPs and their teams put in every single day in order to keep their practices running and their patients safe.

"However, while these figures are testament to the outstanding work and dedication of GPs and our wider practice colleagues, the pressures on our service remain very real and the CQC must be mindful of this and ensure that it does not add to the burdens upon us.

"We will continue to work with the CQC to streamline and  improve the inspection regime so that it is more tailored and focused on the areas that can deliver most benefit to patients without any detriment to GP wellbeing and morale."
