Debunking the 'myths' around appraisal and revalidation

Publication date: 21 October 2016

A new guide aimed at ‘busting the myths’ around the requirements for revalidation and appraisal as applied to GPs is launched this week by the Royal College of General Practitioners.

RCGP Mythbusters – Addressing common misunderstandings about appraisal and revalidation is the result of feedback from RCGP members and collaboration with the GMC and BMA.

It addresses over 40 common misconceptions around areas including Continuing Professional Development (CPD), appraisal documentation and the Personal Development Plan.

It clearly differentiates between the requirements of the General Medical Council and the recommendations of the RCGP and aims to help GPs to identify how to make the appraisal and revalidation processes constructive and supportive to them and their patients.

It aims to:

• Ensure the processes of appraisal and revalidation are worthwhile and valuable for individual GPs, their appraisers and responsible officers.
• Highlight the best ways for GPs to record and demonstrate their supporting information in the most reasonable and proportionate way so as to not detract them from frontline patient care.
• Demonstrate how appraisers can provide encouragement and support to GPs throughout the processes of appraisal and revalidation.

Dr Susi Caesar, Medical Director for Revalidation, said: “Some of our members are telling us that there is still some confusion around revalidation and appraisals.

“The two processes are separate but linked and both are vital, not only for maintaining a GP’s knowledge and skills but also for developing them throughout their career.

“This guide has been written to provide extra clarification for individual GPs, appraisers and responsible officers.

“We hope it will help to clear up any misconceptions our colleagues may have – and encourage College members to provide feedback, and request further detail if necessary, to keep it current.”
