I am a British Army GP, currently based in the Wiltshire area with an interest in mental health and nutrition. I have been in the military since 2004, serving in Germany, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Slovenia to mention a few. I am also an enthusiastic mountaineer and recently co-organised the first all-female expedition to cross Antarctica on skis using muscle power alone. There was a medical research element to the expedition and outside of work I am currently helping write up some of the nutrition data. As First5 Lead I am working to enhance First5 peer support through creating a First5 only BATLS (Battlefield Advanced Trauma Life-support, military trauma course) and Safeguarding Level 3 course.
I currently serve as a Medical Officer at RAF Odiham, having just returned from the UN Mission to South Sudan where I worked as the Aeromedical Evacuation Coordination Officer to the UK Field Hospital. I maintain an interest in occupational medicine and medical education, and I am about to undertake a Diploma in Aerospace Medicine at Kings College, London. As a First5 rep my aims are to build links between the Defence First5 diaspora and the College, and help to improve the support offered to this group by the wider Defence Medical Services.
I trained as a GP in the small town of Peebles in the Scottish Borders, qualifying in 2017, and am now a GP Partner in Lochgilphead on the west coast of Scotland. Our 8 GPs run the community hospital and, with a wider multidisciplinary team, provide in-hours primary care for 8000 registered patients and out-of-hours and A&E care for a population of around 10,000 (with a moderate summer tourist boom). We're over two hours by road from our receiving General Hospital but maintain the generalist expertise and facilities locally to deliver a wide range of intermediate interventions.
I've come from a semi-rural training background but with previous A&E and small hospital experience in New Zealand. I'm enthusiastic about the challenges, pleasures and interest involved in delivering rural healthcare. I have also sat on the RCGP Scotland AiT/First 5 committee for the past year and half and have been recently elected as locality representative to the Highland LMC.
I live with my wife and two young children in the village of Kilmelford on the west coast and enjoy spending time in our beautiful countryside.
