Resources in the nations

England

These e-learning modules, provided by e-learning for Healthcare, are designed to enable multi-professional health and social care professionals develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of management and leadership topics.
Developing People – Improving Care is an evidence-based national framework to guide action on improvement skill-building, leadership development and talent management for people in NHS-funded roles.

Northern Ireland

The HSC Leadership Centre provides a range of management and organisational support to health and social care organisations in Northern Ireland.

Wales

Leaders for the Future is an established RCGP accredited programme which is open to all GPs in Wales, including First 5s, Locums, Partners, Salaried GPs and OOH GPs working in primary care. The programme's philosophy of learning through experience, using integrated development methods and a variety of individual and group settings has proved highly successful with several  cohorts.

Scotland

Leadership skills are required in every day practice. RCGP Scotland has been doing significant work over the past six years to look at what leadership development opportunities are available for GPs and where the gaps in this provision are. Recognising the shift in the health care agenda to working in a more integrated way with the third, social and independent sectors to deliver more care at home or in a homely setting, RCGP Scotland, in conjunction with NHS Education for Scotland and the Scottish Social Services Council, developed a leadership programme to support leadership for integration. You can read more about this programme and courses and events offered by the Faculties in Scotland in this section.

In 2012, RCGP Scotland, in conjunction with NHS Education for Scotland, undertook a two year programme to look at the leadership development opportunities available to GPs and Primary Care professionals and to ascertain where there were gaps in this provision and make recommendations.

PBSGL Module

As part of this work, RCGP Scotland commissioned a Practice Based Small Group Learning (PBSGL) leadership module for frontline health practitioners to:

  • help you think about leadership in your team and how leadership skills can help you deal with challenges both in your practice and when working with other professionals
  • provide information on models/theories of leadership, the qualities which can make someone a 'good' leader and the pitfalls/consequences of bad leadership
  • help you become aware of your leadership styles and behaviours, how these affect other team members

You can find the leadership module under the 'Non-clinical topics' section of the module page.

SOAR Template

To support GPs with a positional leadership role beyond the reaches of their own practice with their appraisal review, a template was developed and uploaded to the Scottish Online Appraisal Resource, along with some guidance.

Leadership for Integration

Towards the end of the project, the healthcare agenda shifted to one of Health and Social Care Integration, so the Scottish Social Services Council were invited to join the partners and developed a programme 'Leadership for Integration' to support Health and Social Care professionals taking on new integration roles. This project commenced in October 2015 and has been extended until March 2019.

There are two elements to the programme: You as a Collaborative Leader which is designed to help individuals recognise their leadership strengths and sources of resilience and identify how they can use these to lead more collaboratively and effectively in delivering integrated care; and

Collaborative Leadership in Practice which focuses on small groups of multi-disciplinary professionals and offers support via an action enquiry approach to enable them to lead change collaboratively and move forward effectively with an integration project or issue. As part of the programme, a 360 degree feedback tool was developed, in line with the six leadership capabilities. Although this is currently only available to programme participants, we are looking at opening it up to all health and social care practitioners in 2018.

Scottish Faculty Courses

From time to time, the RCGP Faculties in Scotland will offer leadership events or courses.
