Associates
To become an associate, you must be a fully or provisionally
registered medical practitioner. If provisionally registered, you
must become fully registered within two years to continue your
associate status. Associateship is specifically targeted at:
- Doctors in Specialty Training for General
Practice
- Doctors who have chosen not to pursue membership
but wish to be linked in some way to the College
While associates are not classed as members of the College and
may not vote at general meetings, there are many benefits involved
in being associated with the College, particularly for doctors in
training.
Associates in Training
As part of the reform of postgraduate medical education for
general practice, the College now plays an active role in the
Certification process and has created the first national Curriculum
for General Practice Training.
Doctors beginning training in August 2007 will complete the new
College assessment (nMRCGP). The primary purpose of the nMRCGP is
to confirm that a doctor has satisfactorily completed specialty
training for general practice and is sufficiently safe and
proficient to enter independent general practice in the UK.
Doctors applying for a Certificate of Completion of Training
(CCT) from the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board
(PMETB) must register with the College and complete the nMRCGP
assessment to receive a CCT. Upon beginning a specialty
training programme the deanery will inform the trainee of
how to register.
Doctors applying for a Statement of Eligibility for GP
Registration direct from PMETB must also register with the College
to access the College's assessment components. Again, the deaneries
will provide the information.
The College has created a membership package to support trainees
through the specialty training programmes and details of all the
benefits can be found here. Trainee members of the College are
known as Associates in Training.
The New Professionals website has been designed as a 'one-stop
shop' for Associates in Training to access all the services related
to the assessment, certification, the curriculum and the membership
benefits.

Associates
In addition to doctors in training, the College has a number of
Associates who are either in general practice, or another medical
specialty, who are not eligible for membership but wish to remain
associated with the College. To qualify for Associateship, you must
be a fully registered medical practitioner.
As an Associate you are eligible for many of the benefits of
membership, including access to information and invitation to
events. If you are interested in joining please use the online
application forms.
Associates in Training should register online at the start of the
training programme.
Associates in Practice should contact the Membership Support
Department. Tel: 020 7589 8710 or e-mail membership@rcgp.org.uk for
