RCGP Substance Misuse and Associated Health

Introductory Certificate in Sexual Health

About the Certificate

RCGP Sex, Drugs & HIV Group (SDHIVG) has developed an Introductory Certificate in Sexual Health.

It is an educational tool for generalist clinicians and practice nurses already working in general practice and provides a basic grounding in sexual health issues.  It is also an excellent course for trainee GP's and other allied professionals such as pharmacists. The structure is based on the highly successful RCGP Certificate in Management of Drug Misuse Part 1.

Sexual health impinges on all aspects of healthcare and all healthcare providers should be able to assess sexual health needs. General practice has a vital role to play as the largest provider of sexual health services in the country, but many areas including sexual well-being, management of sexually transmitted infections and contraception, are not managed to the optimum standard.  Too often sexual health is not raised even in consultations concerning contraception or genital conditions.  We also know that the sexual health section on a drugs assessment is the most poorly completed section, so if you are working in or drug services the course is relevant for you too.

Whilst there are recognised courses available to healthcare professionals wanting to develop their knowledge, skills and competencies in all elements of sexual health e.g. the Sexually Transmitted Infection Foundation Course (STIF) of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) and Diploma of the Faculty of Family of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (DFSRH), the RCGP SDHIVTG judges that there is no single course specifically designed for general practice particularly at the most fundamental level.

The three key aims of the course are:

1.      To develop the knowledge, skills and confidence of generalists in general practice and enable them to practice at

the generalist level in sexual health.

2.      To improve the care of people with sexual health needs in general practice.

3.      To improve and promote the diagnosis and care of people with HIV in general practice.
