RCGP Substance Misuse and Associated Health

The RCGP Certificate in Harm Reduction;

Health, Recovery and Well-being for People Using Drugs

About the certificate

This certificate, comprising an e-learning module and a face-to-face training day, is aimed at those practitioners who are encountering drug and alcohol use as part of their day to day work in health or social care. It is designed to support those without specialist knowledge to develop confidence in engaging and promoting change with people at risk of drug and alcohol related harm.

It will also act as an important refresher for practitioners involved in shared care or specialist services and/or as an CPD update for Part 1 Drug Misuse certificate holders.

It is intended that by completing the certificate participants will be better able to apply techniques that will reduce the harms that are associated with drug and alcohol use and promote the health and wellbeing of individuals, their families and the community.

On completion of the certificate participants will:

  • Be able to identify and explore strategies that can reduce stigma and increase access to healthcare services for people using drugs and alcohol
  • Be able to promote specific interventions that reduce injecting risk and the transmission of hepatitis, HIV and other infections among people who inject drugs
  • Understand the strategies required to help people who inject drugs, their families and carers, in the prevention and response to overdose situations
  • Understand how reducing drug and alcohol related harm and overcoming barriers to primary health care maximises health, recovery and well-being

The course is designed to encourage participants to be actively involved in the learning process by supporting reflective practice and contribution through presentations, small and large group learning activities, case study work and discussion.
