Publication of the Collings report in The Lancet. After visiting many practices Joseph Collings concluded that whilst specialist medicine had been growing and developing there were no standards for general practice, no incentives to go into it and that the demands of national insurance had put an intolerable strain upon the G.P.

Graves Medical Recording Service
Graves Medical recording

The Medical Recording Service, the brain child of Valerie and John Graves, provided taped recordings of talks that could be listened to and studied in one’s own time. The emphasis was on topics likely to promote discussion though more traditional material was also available on loan. From a pilot scheme (involving 27 members) financed by Smith, Kline & French, it grew into a service supplying a circuit of 450 members. The scale and scope of the service mushroomed and a separate Independent Recording Service Foundation was set up in April 1967.

distribution was produced in 1953. Its content shifted over the years to include reports on the work of the College, matters of interest to General Practice as well as research. 1958 saw the appearance of the first edition of The Journal of the College of General Practitioners. It was the first GP journal to be listed in the Index Medicus (1961)
