First Pfizer postgraduate grant awarded of £30 a year for each faculty "to encourage the continuing education of its members and associates".

First Upjohn travelling fellowship awarded of £200 for not less than two weeks postgraduate study at a hospital, clinic or health centre. see 1983

Professor Richard Scott gave annual James Mackenzie lecture entitled "Medicine in Society" "the present state of affairs in general practice in every country was the concern of nearly everyone and not only of family doctors themselves, and that medicine could flourish only when society was willing and able to pay the price of providing resources, manpower and administrative machinery for ensuring that the doctor had the education, the time and the tools to do this job properly."

Sixteenth James Mackenzie lecture by Dr G K Hodgkin entitled "Behaviour – the community and the GP". "’We in our college have gradually gained our confidence and medical recognition by first defining and then preaching that general practice is an academic discipline in its own right. But if the academic status of general practice is to rise, it is necessary to develop an active area of research in a field unique to general practice; to be fully effective this unique field must have wide spread interest and application. It is my thesis that the study of human behaviour provides the general practitioner with just such a unique and interesting field of research."

1997

Quality Team Practice Award launched nationwide. The award was set up in 1995 under the guidance of the Quality Practice Award Working Party and was piloted in the North East Scotland Faculty of the RCGP in 1996 with the help of a grant from the Primary Care Development Fund.

 

1997

First Bill Styles Memorial Award awarded to a younger member or associate to enable further General Practice education either within the UK or abroad.

 

June 1997

Joe Kai awarded first of Boots/RCGP Research in the Community prize.

Aug 2003 QPA (Quality Practice Award) criteria updated to take into account new GP contract

June 2004

Paul Freeling Award  (PFA) for innovative or meritorious work in the field of vocational training in general practice is launched. The Award, open to course organisers and trainers, is inspired by the work of the late Professor Paul Freeling. Award winners will receive a certificate and £1000, donated by the Professor Freeling’s widow, Mrs Shirley Freeling. The Award’s presentation will take place annually. Paul Freeling was a Professor of General Practice at the St George’s Hospital Medical School in Tooting, London. Renowned for his services to general practice training, he was instrumental in helping GPs recognise depression as a disease. He was also an accomplished writer of medical books and co-authored many popular works including The Doctor-Patient Relationship (1) in 1967 and The Future General Practitioner (2) in 1972.

Alastair Short Travelling Fellowship - £40,000 was donated and it was decided to have a annual Fellowship of £5,000 over a period of 10 years. The Fellowship was open to GP Registrars, Public Health Trainees and young doctors in their first 5 years in these specialties.

Inaugural Disability Care Award - given to individual or team in recognition of innovative or significant developments in the organisation, accessibility or delivery of care to disabled people. Sponsored by Leonard Cheshire Foundation.

Announcement of new research award "Discovery in Family Medicine"  – to recognise research that has had a major impact or longstanding effect on family medicine. The research will be judged against the following categories: the extent of excellence and achievement; its value and benefit to general practice; its value and benefit to patients; the extent of innovation; and evidence of its acceptance or widespread uptake within the health community [see Sep 2006]

The GP Enterprise Awards organised by GP newspaper and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) to reward hard-working practices for innovations in everyday care, and to help spread their ideas throughout the UK.

Each winner receives £3,000, plus a celebratory meal at a local venue of their choice and a commemorative plaque for the surgery. The readers of GP will now vote for their favourite practice. The winner of that poll will receive another £7,000.
