Revalidation Supporting Tools

The RGCP is developing a suite of tools to support GPs in collecting evidence for revalidation.

Appraisal

The RCGP wants to ensure that the quality of appraisal is consistent for everyone, and has developed several papers to explain how the College can support this process.

Principles of GP Appraisal small pdf logo sets out a policy and principles to underpin the appraisal process for General Practitioners. February 2008.

Joint RCGP/CoGPED Position Statement - Includes key recommendations on appraisal in England. September 2008.

Personal Development Plan Guidance for Appraisers - Provides guidance to appraisers on how to advise their appraisees on PDP construction. June 2008.

Core Information for Quality Assurance of GP Appraisal - The paper sets out the consensus view from across the UK on the development of common quality assurance standards of appraisal. November 2008.

RCGP ePortfolio

The Revalidation ePortfolio has been developed by the RCGP, working closely with GPs, to ensure that it will support the needs of GPs, GP appraisers and PCOs as a comprehensive appraisal and revalidation toolkit. All appraisal material entered this year will be ready and waiting for the start of revalidation.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Every GP will need to collect at least 50 CPD Credits per year, 250 over the five year revalidation cycle. The RCGP has developed a credits system based on the time spent on the activity and the impact is has on the doctor, his or her patients and the service. In essence 1 hour of education is 1 learning credit.  However, if that education leads to changes for patients, the doctor or the practice, the GP can claim 2 learning credits for each hour of such education.

Essential Knowledge Updates (EKU)

Essential Knowledge Updates (EKU) is a scenario-based learning tool that will enable GPs to collect CPD Credits while keeping up-to-date with new and changing knowledge in general practice.

Essential Knowledge Challenge (EKC)

The Essential Knowledge Challenge (EKC) is a multiple choice, voluntary assessment that tests an individual's understanding of the Knowledge Updates. GPs who achieve at least 70% in the challenge can download a certificate for their portfolios of evidence.

Clinical Audit

The RCGP's Clinical Innovation and Research Centre (CIRC) provides helpful support for those undertaking Clinical Audit in Primary Care.  This can be accessed here

Colleague (MSF) and Patient Questionnaire (PSQ) tools

The RCGP currently recommends the following Colleague and Patient Questionnaire tools for the purposes of revalidation:

Colleague Surveys

Patient Surveys

Assessment of these tools was based on the breadth of coverage by each tool (mapped to the GMC Framework) and the validation undertaken for each tool. Assessment was not based on the companies themselves, value for money or the method used for analysis and feedback.
