Revalidation: Guidance for GPs
Question and Answer (Q&A) Bank
The Q & A bank provides an easy to navigate information resource, containing questions and answers developed by the RCGP Specialty Advisers with sample scenarios and links to relevant resources in each section.
We have also incorporated a number of generic revalidation Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) developed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.
RCGP Example Portfolios
The RCGP has developed Example Portfolios to demonstrate how GPs in a variety of roles can demonstrate they meet the appraisal and revalidation standards set by the GMC.
Each portfolio has been authored by a RCGP Specialty Adviser with a specific area of expertise.
The following toolkits have been developed to offer guidance in specific areas and can be considered as supplementary guidance to the RCGP Guide to the Revalidation of General Practitioners.
Download the guide
The RCGP Guide to Revalidation of General Practitioners contains information about the process and the types of supporting information that GPs are expected to collect in order to demonstrate that they are meeting the standards set by the General Medical Council (GMC).
Frequently Asked Questions
Key news and guidance updates
- The new national GP Induction and Refresher scheme takes effect on the 1st of April 2015, details are to be found on the NHS England website here
- The General Medical Council has commissioned a major research study to evaluate medical revalidation. This is to be conducted independently by UMbRELLA, a UK-wide collaboration of academics and revalidation implementers.
In late May/June, unless they have opted out, doctors will be sent an email from the UMbRELLA research team entitled ‘Help shape the future of medical revalidation’. This email will include a unique link to complete the online questionnaire. By completing the questionnaire, doctors can make a valuable contribution to the understanding of what has happened since the launch of revalidation and help to shape the process better for patients and for doctors in the future.
The College would encourage our members to participate in this online survey.

Supporting Information for appraisal and revalidation: guidance for General Practitioners
The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties’ Core Guidance describes the supporting information that all doctors are required to collect for revalidation, providing a common template for each College and Faculty to add specialty-specific information.
Supporting Information for appraisal and revalidation: guidance for General Practitioners (PDF) is the RCGP version of that document.
