Capital Appeal Grand Draw winners announced

We are delighted to announce the winners of the 2011 Capital Appeal Grand Draw, which took place at our Bow Churchyard offices on Thursday 15th December.

Members from all over the country have won prizes including a year’s membership to the College, course vouchers, wine tasting and tickets for the Olympic games.

The  top two prizes of one year’s free membership and a three day pass for the 2012 annual conference were won by Dr Simon Abrams and Dr Torquil Duncan-Brown. Dr Kishor Vithlani, Honorary Treasurer to the Mersey Faculty and Dr Helen Stokes Lampard, Assistant Honorary Treasurer to the RCGP were delighted to present the prizes to the two doctors.

The draw was a great success and raised much needed funds towards the Capital Appeal, thank you to all those who took part. There is a piece about the draw in the February issue of RCGP news, and you can see photos of the draw in our gallery.

January building update 31/01/12

We are still in the construction phase – so it’s still very much a building site – but the layout and features are really taking shape.

The new steel 'cage' is in place in the auditorium as are the concrete bases for seating for 300 people. The basic layouts for office spaces, bedrooms, CSA areas and the kitchens are also in place. Construction has begun on the light-wells that will create a light and airy feeling throughout the building, and the roof terrace is being developed with brick sections that previously held old plant-work being removed.

The building will become 'watertight' by mid April once the glass roofs are installed above the light wells. We will then move on to the fit out.

Rather than occupying the building in phases whilst snagging work continues, we now intend to move in all in one go. We have also decided to avoid moving in during the Olympics/Paralympics. We expect the building to be completely finished and handed over by Friday 21 September and the College will move in that weekend.

November building update 15/11/11

The lecture theatre is being created by introducing large steel 'goal posts’ which will hold up the rest of the building. When the current weight bearing steels were removed the building shifted by 12mm against a predicted tolerance of 15mm – prompting a sigh of relief, especially from Ian Craig the structural engineer!

The third floor plant area has been created and scaffolding is being built on the atria almost complete. When the scaffolding is completed, a tented roof will be constructed over the building which will allow the 4th floor plant area and 5th floor state rooms to be created over the next few months irrespective of the weather.

Internal works on floors 1-4 continue a pace including repairs to grade 2* listed features.

The Honorary Treasurer is pleased to report that the project is continuing with September 2012 entry date and on budget.

Euston Square update 25/07/11

On Wednesday evening I attended a meeting at Euston Square and was lucky enough to have a tour of the building.

The interior has been completely gutted, but you already get a great feel of what the building will be like when work is finished, with lots of light and space throughout.

What impressed me most - apart from the height of the crane! - was the sheer size of our new headquarters, and how much work is going into creating the best possible facilities. The new CSA rooms, for example, have got very impressive soundproofing!

I managed to take some rather blurry photos whilst I was there, and although I don't think they'll win any photography competitions I hope they give you a real sense of the progress being made on our exciting project. The photos have been added to the 'More building work'  gallery.
