About us

We support over 1,926 Members, Fellows, Associates and Associates in Training (AiT) in Surrey, West Sussex and the outer fringes of South West London.

As well as a full range of educational and social activities, we run a revalidation programme for local members in collaboration with the South East Thames Faculty and the HE KSS.

Getting involved

We rely on members to play an active role locally, promoting the College's aims and objectives. It is essential to raise and maintain awareness of demographic issues and the needs of GPs and patients alike, so that we can develop initiatives to support them both.

We are currently looking for some AiT and First5 reps to join the board, if you would like to find out more about becoming involved with the faculty we would be delighted to hear from you.

Faculty News

Below are dates of the Faculty board meetings. The meetings are open to all interested members, and are held at the University of Surrey, Guildford, GU2 7XH.

  • Tuesday 19 September
  • Thursday 16 November - AGM

Please contact the faculty office ( should you wish to attend board meetings, if you would like to discuss any item covered or would like an item to be considered at a future meeting.

WONCA Bursary

We are pleased to announce that we offer a bursary of £400 enabling a GP to attend the WONCA Europe Regional Conference.

Faculty Events

We are keen to support the educational and training needs of our AiTs. We are also involved in other educational and career supportive events throughout the year. These evenings are often informal and give local GPs and trainees the chance to talk and learn from each other’s different experiences.

Details of forthcoming South West Thames Faculty meetings, social events and educational courses can be accessed via the Upcoming Events box on the right.

Faculty Initiatives

Current Research

Commit To Change is a pilot project run by Surrey University and NHS Kingston CCG. Its aim is to help people achieve health goals by making online 'commitment contracts'. Participants either take part for free or give money to a charity of their choice if they fail to carry out their commitments.

The John Lasserson Award

Dr John Lasserson MRCGP was the Honorary Treasurer of our faculty for many years. He was a GP in an outer suburb of London and also worked as a GP trainer for 25 years. He took great pride in practising clinical care to the highest standard, and encouraging others to do the same. We are pleased to have, together with his family, established an award in his name.

The John Lasserson Award is presented annually to the highest scoring trainee of the GP examinations from the South West Thames Faculty. The award consists of £300, and a framed certificate.

Faculty Audit and Research Grant

We are awarding small grants of up to £200 to GPs and practice nurses to help with the cost of practice audits and small-scale research projects. This scheme is designed to cut through bureaucracy and paperwork and make small awards available to grass roots GPs and practice nurses.

South East Thames and South West Thames and Brighton and Sussex Medical School Student Prize

For Brighton and Sussex Medical School students only, the RCGP South East Thames and South West Thames Faculties are sponsoring a competition whereby the BSMS tutors invite their top twenty students to submit a reflection, on one side of A4, giving their thoughts on general practice. The tutors shortlist the entries and then invite the two faculties to agree the awards. The faculties will then publish the winning entries in their e-bulletin to members. First prize is a cheque for £200, second prize £100 and third prize £50.
