Welcome to the South Yorkshire North Trent Faculty's blog where you can read all our latest news.

Our Faculty is passionate about engaging and supporting our members at all levels of their professional life. This year we have introduced a new Foundation Doctors committee which is made up of five members.

Working with members of the Board, Foundation doctors organised and delivered their first event, 'Preparing for General Practice.' This event came about as the Foundation doctors felt that general practice was one of the most challenging rotations of foundation training which was unexpected for a number of them. They felt that they were less prepared for a four-month rotation in general practice than they were for their hospital jobs.

The inaugural event was held at a local GP practice and was attended by 17 delegates – a mixture of foundation doctors and medical students. The course was well received with encouraging feedback. Many of the attendees stated their objectives in coming to the course were to familiarise themselves with presentations in general practice prior to commencing their placements, to improve their confidence and knowledge, to help them revise for upcoming medical school finals and to find out about what general practice rotations are like as a foundation doctor.

The vast majority stated that they felt their objectives were met and that they enjoyed the opportunity to consolidate their learning.

One attendee suggested that running a similar course in other regions would be worthwhile as they had travelled to Sheffield from Chester for this course (though thankfully stated they felt it had been worthwhile!). We have taken on board feedback about timings of the day, and the fact that some of the talks felt quite rushed, and the suggestion that we could cover some more non-clinical aspects of a GP's role.

Overall the programme was scored as 73% 'Excellent' and 27% 'Good' in the feedback. We plan to run this course on a biannual basis at times to complement the change in rotations for foundation doctors, making changes based on the feedback received to improve the course for the future.

We are aiming to recruit more foundation doctor members to our group on an annual basis to make this project sustainable.

Furthermore, the Faculty is organising our Celebrating General Practice evening which will take place on Saturday 10 November 2018 (venue to be confirmed) and is free to all RCGP members.
