Vulnerable people – a challenge for the health service
In the December BJGP we have concentrated on three groups of people in the population who are likely to find Christmas and the coming winter particularly tough – poor, displaced and damaged children, homeless men, and people with intellectual disabilities.
Research & editorial
- Kids Company
Vulnerable children are the subject of a hard-hitting editorial by Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder and director of Kids Company, which supports about 36,000 children, young people and vulnerable adults.
- Health for the homeless
Homeless men die 30 years before the national average, at the age of 47. Watton and Gallivan report on how primary care can respond to the needs of marginalised people.
- Intellectual disabilities
People with intellectual disabilities also die too soon – at least 16 years before they should – and delays in making diagnoses are one important cause. Heslop et al suggest actions that might be considered by clinicians to address this problem.
